Former Chief Economist Kruckmeyer on potential gas tax increase

Missouri voters said back in 2018 they don’t want to pay even one cent more in gas taxes. But Former State Chief Economist Tom Kruckmeyer Missouri hasn’t raised the gas tax in nearly 25 years.

“They will say, ‘Yeah, we need more funding for highways,’ but they don’t appear to be, at least the majority, willing to do something positive to make that happen. The obvious solution, of course, is some kind of increase in the gasoline tax,” said Kruckmeyer.

Senators this week debated a two cent gas tax hike. If that measure passes both chambers voters wouldn’t get a say on it.
