Glascock on board with community policing plan

The last permanent Columbia city manager, Mike Matthes, resigned while facing criticism about how he was putting in a new community policing plan. The next city manager, John Glascock, says a big key is to treat people how you want to be treated.

“If it’s just a minor infraction it doesn’t take a large hammer to talk to that person and let them know and say ‘Hey, you broke the law. Here’s what you do.’ And be kind about it,” Glascock said while talking to the media last week. “You don’t have to have handcuffs out every time you arrest somebody.”

Glascock was officially announced as city manager this week. He will hire the next permanent police chief. He’s the one who named Geoff Jones the interim chief in January, and he’s praised Jones for his approach to community policing.
