Glascock expresses optimistic financial outlook in State of the City address

Columbia City Manager John Glascock expressed an optimistic outlook on the city’s financial future during his State of the City address Tuesday.

Glascock said he’s much happier about the city’s financial situation now as opposed to this time last year, during the early stages of the coronavirus pandemic. Glascock said Columbia is ready to shake off hardships caused by the virus.

“We have to begin shifting our focus toward recovery rather than reaction, and I am confident we have the tools and staffing to do that,” said Glascock.

Glascock says the city will spend $1.8 million on pandemic-related assistance to individuals and businesses. Some of that money will be set aside for the hospitality industry.

“We will have a business license and health inspection rebate program, and we will provide reimbursements for COVID-related expenses for the hospitality industry and concert venues,” said Glascock.

Glascock also recommended a pay raise for city employees during the next fiscal year.
