MERS Goodwill is closing its stores on both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, for the first time in its 100-year history.

MERS Goodwill senior vice president Mark Kahrs tells 939 the Eagle that it’s a way to thank Goodwill employees for their hard work. MERS Missouri Goodwill’s mission is “changing lives through the power of work.”

“And this year we really tried to look and say, there’s so much if you look around the environment, there’s a lot of opportunities for employees to go find other work. And it’s hard out there for the people that are going to work all the time. And we really felt like that was a way for us to honor them and show our appreciation for them for everything they’ve done this year,” Kahrs says.

MERS Goodwill will also close early on New Year’s Eve, and will be closed on New Year’s Day. The company has three mid-Missouri stores: in Columbia, Jefferson City and Moberly.

“We will be closing on Friday on Christmas Eve and closed then Saturday (Christmas) as well and reopen at our normal hours on Sunday. And then we’re going to close a little early on New Year’s Eve at around 5, and then we will be closed all day on New Year’s Day that Saturday as well, and then reopen that Sunday for our normal hours,” says Kahrs.

New Year’s Eve is traditionally one of the busiest donation days at Goodwill, as customers donate items before the end of the calendar year.
