Gov. Parson expects $500 million COVID-19 shortfall

Governor Parson says Missouri is estimating COVID-19 will leave the state at least $500 million short of its budget between now and June 30th.

Parson says he’s restricting $180 million in state spending as a result, calling the moves necessary to balance the state’s books while it continues fighting the coronavirus pandemic.

The governor says the withholding impacts many state departments. Missouri’s Department of Higher Education and Workforce Development is hardest-hit, with a restriction of more than $81.5 million. You can read the full list of cutbacks here.

Parson says the state hopes the federal government comes through with $315 million to help fund the 2020 budget, but even then, more restrictions may happen.
