Governor Parson calls special session

(AP) – Missouri Republican Gov. Mike Parson is calling a special legislative session to undo a court ruling on vehicle sales taxes.

Parson on Wednesday announced he’s directing lawmakers to work on the issue beginning Sept. 9. That’s the same week as lawmakers’ scheduled short session to consider overriding vetoes.

A June Missouri Supreme Court ruling says people can only count the money earned from selling one vehicle as a tax credit against the sales tax of a replacement car.

Previously, revenue officials allowed people to count earnings from selling multiple vehicles against the sales tax of a replacement car.

Democratic House Minority Leader Crystal Quade says an “unnecessary tax break” isn’t a good enough reason for a special session. She says gun violence and Medicaid for children are more important issues.
