Hawley moves to force House to send articles of impeachment

The U.S. Senate is still waiting on Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to send articles of impeachment to the upper chamber.

Missouri Republican Senator Josh Hawley on Monday introduced a change to Senate rules, which would force her to send those articles.

“Nancy Pelosi is trying to run the Senate. She is trying to be the leader of the Senate and control what we do. She is trying to prevent a trial, and the bottom line is that is not what the constitution says,” Sen. Hawley said on Fox and Friends on Monday.

Speaker Pelosi says she wants to make sure the trial will be fair before she sends the articles of impeachment of President Trump.

More from the Associated Press:

U.S. Sen. Josh Hawley of Missouri is proposing a rule change that would allow the Senate to dismiss the impeachment of President Donald Trump. Hawley’s proposal, unveiled on Monday, says the Senate could dismiss the articles of impeachment if the House doesn’t deliver them within 25 days of its impeachment vote, which was Dec. 18. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has delayed sending the articles of impeachment to the Senate in an effort to pressure the Senate to call witnesses if it holds an impeachment trial. Ten Republican senators signed on as co-sponsors of Hawley’s proposal.
