Hawley proposes requiring tech companies to prove no bias

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) – Republican Sen. Josh Hawley of Missouri is doubling down on efforts to rein in big-tech companies by proposing that they be required to prove they’re not using political bias to filter content.

Hawley filed the bill Wednesday. It would require companies to prove to the Federal Trade Commission that their algorithms and other ways they filter content are not biased against a party or candidate.

If companies don’t do that, they would lose current legal protections that shield them from being sued over posts on their sites made by users.

President Donald Trump and other Republicans have repeatedly claimed anti-conservative bias by tech companies, which tech companies have denied.

Big tech has said Hawley’s bill would discourage companies from self-policing hate speech and extremist views by opening websites up to lawsuits.
