Homes damaged by tornado or flooding could qualify for tax break

The tornado damage to your home may earn you a small break in your property taxes.

Cole County Assessor Chris Estes said you can check in with the office.

“(If) your home has become uninhabitable through a natural disaster, you can go to the assessor’s office, fill out a form for us, and we can give a temporary reduction to your property taxes,” he said.

Estes said the property tax break also covers flood damaged homes.

When the home is renovated standard rates will again apply.
