Jefferson City councilmen back proposed river port

Do you really think there’s enough barge traffic on the Missouri River to warrant building a river port in Jefferson City? Councilman Carlos Graham says he was surprised at the numbers, and what that could mean for the local economy.

“This is very exciting times.”

The plan is to put in a port either at the National Guard training site downstream from Jefferson City or on the Callaway County side. The port could cost millions of dollars, but grants may pick up a lot of the tab.

The federal government recently signed off on setting up the Heartland Port Authority.
