Jefferson City man convicted of 2017 murder of well-known snake breeder

A jury deliberated for about five hours before returning a guilty verdict late Wednesday night against a Jefferson City man for the 2017 murder of a Montgomery County snake breeder.

ABC 17’s Lucas Geisler reports Michael Humphrey’s head dropped as the jury’s verdict was read at about 9:45 pm in Mexico, Missouri.

The case was moved to Audrain County on a change of venue, and the jury was brought in from Cape Girardeau County.

Prosecutors say Humphrey drove Ben Renick’s wife Lynlee to the Montgomery County farm, where the 2017 murder happened. Lynlee, who’s from Columbia, will go on trial for murder in December.

ABC-17 News reports two sheriff’s deputies escorted Humphrey to a sheriff’s vehicle last night, after the verdict was read.

Humphrey will be sentenced in January.
