Lawmakers create new oversight committee to investigate DOR withholding error

(Missourinet) Lawmakers have created a new, bipartisan House Special Committee on Government Oversight in order to explore the state Department of Revenue’s withholding error that will impact some people’s taxes.

The committee blasted the DOR at its first meeting Wednesday over an inaccurate calculation of the federal tax deduction.

Revenue Director Joel Walters told lawmakers the DOR discovered the error in September and launched a social media campaign to inform taxpayers. Some state representatives were still unhappy.

“You talked about sending out the emails and posters, or this and that,” said Yikon Rep. Robert Ross. “Frankly, I was not aware of this going on and I keep a pretty good ear to the ground on different things going on.”

He told revenue officials that constituents will “lose their minds over this.”

Walters testified before the committee Wednesday, and told members some people will have to pay because they didn’t change their withholdings and that state refunds are about $80 dollars lower per taxpayer than a year ago.

There is a dedicated phone law set up for people who are facing issues.

“We consistently work with taxpayers who need more time to pay their taxes or are struggling to pay their taxes,” he said.

The phone number for the line is (573) 522-0967.

The committee plans to meet again next week.
