Lewis challenges incumbent Tergin in JC mayor race

Like Columbia, Jefferson City has a contested race for mayor on Tuesday.

Tiwan Lewis says she has battled homelessness and hard times, but does not agree with folks who think they’re entitled to welfare.

“I come from it. I’ve watched it year in and year out. We have generational food stamp recipients that this is acceptable with taxpayer dollars.”

Incumbent Carrie Tergin says she works hard to be financially conservative.

“Trying to allocate our resources, whether it’s for our streets and our curbs and stormwater and public safety and all those priorities, and trying to manage that with the limited resources we have.”

Tergin is running for re-election after first serving on the city council. Lewis owns a catering business and is new to city politics.
