You can bet it is tough to keep nurses on staff in Missouri’s veterans homes when they can go to the hospital up the street and make a lot more money.
Veterans Commission Director Colonel Grace Link says that plays a role in those veterans who are still on a waiting list.
“We’ve really taken a really strong look at this list to ensure that the people on the list really require 24-hour skilled nursing care.”
Link says the commission is working to cut internal costs and funnel more of those resources to caregiver salaries. Currently, some 400 veterans are waiting for a space in one of the state’s seven veterans homes. Link says she now has to make sure that only veterans who need 24-hour care are on that list.
