A local stroke survivor who’s also a sickle cell patient is urging you to consider donating blood on today’s (Thursday) final day of the Mizzou homecoming blood drive at Columbia’s Hearnes Center.

Thomas Carter IV of Columbia helped cut the ribbon for the blood drive this week. He tells 939 the Eagle that despite his health challenges, he’s excited to help the Red Cross.

“I hope that we can get more blood donations and more people to come in and donate blood because you’re helping people like me. You know the doctor told me I wouldn’t live past a certain age. Well I guess I kind of succeeded,” Mr. Carter says.

The Red Cross of Central and Northern Missouri chapter says there’s currently a blood shortage. This year’s goal is 4,000 pints.  You can donate blood today until 6 pm at the Hearnes Center fieldhouse. Mr. Carter tells 939 the Eagle that he wants to give back to the Red Cross, which has helped him.

“If I can help push out this energy toward someone else that’s kind of my view here today … you know hopefully to save another life,” says Carter.

The Red Cross says you can walk in at any time before 6 pm to donate blood.
