United Community Builders (UCB) is planning a Saturday “Taste and See” fundraiser at their Beacon of Light community center to raise money for scholarships and for programming.
UCB Senior Bishop Damian Dean promises an unforgettable day of flavor, fellowship and impact with the fundraiser:
“To support UCB’s programming and also our future Builders scholarship fund that we do for families in need that want to participate in our child development center and some of our other programs that we have,” Bishop Dean says.
UCB raised more than $8-million for the community center, which is one of Columbia’s poorest areas in the Whitegate neighborhood near Sylvan and Towne. It opened in April and is designed to be an anchor for the community. Bishop Dean tells 939 the Eagle’s Mike Murphy that the center was deliberately built in that area:
“The reason why I’m so favorable there is because we have some of the worst neighborhoods in Columbia. But we didn’t run from it, we ran towards it because we really want to be of service,” Bishop Dean tells listeners on the “Eagle Eye Drive at 5.”
The community center is open Monday through Saturday and includes a gymnasium and a community room.
UCB is hosting Saturday’s “Taste and See” fundraiser and soul food tasting event from 10 am to 2 pm at the Beacon of Light. Tickets are $50. Bishop Dean says every bite tells a story.
