Local COVID-19 Update (Dec. 18)

Cole and Callaway counties both reported large increases in COVID-19 deaths Friday.

Cole reported another 21 COVID-19 deaths, bringing total deaths in the county to 84. The county also confirmed 34 new coronavirus cases.

Callaway confirmed another 10 people have died from COVID-19, but health officials say the sharp increase on Friday is due to reporting delays at the state level. Active coronavirus cases in the county rose slightly, to 535.

Boone County officials said Thursday morning a patient between 60-64 years old died, and then said Thursday afternoon that two more passed away. One of those patients was between 75-79 years old, and the other was older than 80. That’s now 43 deaths from the virus in the county.

Active coronavirus cases went down in Boone County on Friday. There were 153 new positive cases in Boone, but active cases went down to 979. Hospitalizations dropped, to 126, but are still putting a strain on resources.

Cole County reported a relatively low number of 43 new cases Thursday. The current number of active cases is no longer available.
