Local health official sees flattening curve in Boone County virus cases

Expect Columbia and Boone County to match Missouri’s stay-at-home order.

The local one is set to expire on Apr. 24, but city council members on Monday night sounded like they will stretch it out to May 4.

Local public health director Stephanie Browning says the city and county are on track for a gradual re-opening at that point.

“I think the data shows that we’ve got a flattening of the curve that’s happening,” Browning said. “We’d like to see a little bit more of a reduction, but I think we’re in a really good spot.”

Browning says she’s encouraged by the available hospital equipment, protective gear, and testing available in case there’s a local spike in cases again. She is looking at four factors so that Columbia and Boone County can gradually re-open: a sustained reduction in cases for two weeks, hospital capacity that can handle every case in region, widely-available testing kits, and systems in place to quickly isolate and trace new cases.
