Man killed in central Columbia; fifth city homicide in September

It is already the tenth apparent homicide in Columbia this year.

Police say 23-year-old James Hickem was shot and killed in the middle of town at about 8:13 p.m. Wednesday near McBaine Avenue and Duncan Street. There is no suspect info yet.

Online Columbia crime data goes back to 1985. The city has never reported ten homicides in a year in that time.

This is the fifth homicide, and the sixth shooting death, in Columbia since Sept. 13.
