It’s not being shut down — just spread around.
Columbia city manager Mike Matthes released a letter to the public Thursday afternoon saying he wanted to clarify the fate of CPD’s Community Outreach Unit.
Rather than abandoning the effort at the beginning of 2019, as was alluded to by deputy chief Jill Schlude, the eight members of the unit would each be assigned to one of the eight police ‘beats’ in the city.
Right now, the COU focuses its attention on four neighborhoods.
Matthes says the city’s plan also includes adding a sergeant to the community outreach efforts.
