Messenger wins Pulitzer for articles on debtors prisons

How would you like to walk out of jail with a big bill hanging over your head for time served?

The St. Louis Post Dispatch’s Tony Messenger won a Pulitzer Prize for his series of articles on so-called “debtors prisons” in Missouri.

The Missouri Supreme Court has now ruled that judges can’t jail poor defendants for non-payment of bills.

But Messenger claims some judges are still ignoring the ruling.
