Mid-Missouri man sentenced to two decades in prison for deadly DWI head-on crash

A Moberly man will spend the next 20 years in prison after pleading guilty to the horrific April DWI crash that killed a Moberly woman and her unborn child.

Our news partner KMIZ reports 47-year-old Steven Garrett was sentenced to 20 years in prison on Tuesday afternoon by Carroll County Circuit Judge Kevin Walden. Garrett’s case was moved from Randolph to northwest Missouri’s Carroll County on a change of venue, due to pretrial news media coverage in mid-Missouri.

Garrett was originally charged with two counts of second degree murder and several other felonies: he pleaded guilty in September to felony DWI causing the death of two or more.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol’s April crash report says the incident happened when Garrett crossed the center line and struck a vehicle driven by a Moberly man head-on. The crash killed a passenger in the second vehicle, 22-year-old Maya Stilwell. Ms. Stilwell’s father-in-law, Dale Maylee, told 939 the Eagle in April that his daughter-in-law was six-months pregnant at the time of the crash.
