Fulton firefighters say a woman who was rescued from a Westminster College campus storm drain had been trapped in the drain for about 18 hours.

Fulton firefighters say the woman was showing signs of hypothermia when she was rescued on Tuesday morning. She was flown by helicopter to Columbia’s University Hospital for treatment. The department says the woman had entered the storm drain from an off-campus location and followed it to campus. A Westminster student walking in the area heard her screaming on Tuesday morning and immediately contacted authorities.

The Columbia Fire Department’s confined space rescue team provided mutual aid. Numerous other agencies were also involved, including Fulton Police, Fulton’s street department and the Callaway County ambulance district.
