Missouri Highway Patrol’s now handling investigation into Boone County’s deadly deputy-involved shooting

The investigation into Sunday morning’s deadly deputy-involved shooting east of Columbia is now being handled by the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Division of Drug and Crime Control (DDCC).

Patrol Corporal Kyle Green says the Boone County Sheriff’s Department requested that the DDCC handle the investigation. Corporal Green tells 939 the Eagle that this is an active investigation, so no other information will be released at this time.

The suspect who was shot and killed by a deputy has been identified as 37-year-old Blain Johnson of Columbia. Johnson led police on a high-speed pursuit that ended in a field. Deputies say an armed Johnson got out of the vehicle, fled on foot and displayed a weapon. The sheriff’s department says a deputy fired in response, and that Johnson was struck by gunfire and died at the scene.

Corporal Green says that at the conclusion of the DDCC’s investigation, all evidence and documentation will be sent to the Boone County prosecutor’s office.
