(AP) – Missouri’s Republican-led House is advancing a bill that would ban almost all abortions in the state if the U.S. Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade.
House members voted 110-37 Tuesday to advance the measure as part of a broader package of abortion restrictions. The abortion ban includes exceptions for medical emergencies.
The bill comes as abortion opponents across the country are hopeful the high court will either reverse Roe v. Wade, or uphold specific state laws that could undermine the ruling establishing a nationwide right to abortion.
Other provisions in the Missouri bill include a ban on most abortions after a fetal heartbeat can be detected, which can be as early as six weeks into a pregnancy.
The Missouri measure needs another vote of approval to go to the Senate.
