Missouri-made wine poses risk of exploding

The Division of Alcohol and Tobacco Control is warning against buying or selling an Eldon manufacturer’s wine.

Officials said six different types of bottled wine by Casa de Loco poses a danger of blowing up and should not be consumed.

The six types are:

  • Applesauced
  • Bellini Gold
  • Coming in Hot
  • Kona Lover Port
  • OCD
  • Peachy Loco

Apparently, the wines are unregistered and were never submitted to the ATC for product brand registration. That would have included a review and product evaluation, which is required by Missouri law.

Officials are aware of the wine being distributed to retailers in several mid-Missouri locations including Camdenton, Glasgow, Lenanon, Osage Beach, Sunrise Beach, and Wright City.

During a routine inspection, the ATC learned the wine was unregistered. While sitting in an ATC evidence storage room, a bottle exploded. Then officials began learning about additional explosions. Bottles are also reportedly breaking spontaneously and leaking.

“We are continuing to investigate, however, it’s important that anyone who has these unregistered Casa de Loco products take immediate action to prevent injury,” ATC state supervisor Dorothy Taylor said. “We ask that any consumer or retailer who has a bottle of the six affected Casa De Loco wines call our offices and report when and where they purchased the wine.”

The number to call is (573) 751-2964. Casa de Loco has informed ATC that it will be removing the products from retailers.

ABC 17 News reports that the owner, Larry Owens, said that only about 80 bottles were out in stores. He said the wine needed to be kept refrigerated, and that bottles stored in warmer areas were breaking or had the corks pushed out.

Owens told ABC 17 News that they’ve halted bottling and removed the remaining ones from stores.

The Department of Health and Senior Services is also investigating Casa De Loco for potential health and safety violations at its Eldon manufacturing premises.

The Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau, as well as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is involved in the investigation.
