Missouri’s education commissioner praises $400 million broadband plan for state

Missouri’s governor says a $400 million broadband improvement plan will serve the state’s citizens for generations to come.

Governor Mike Parson (R) announced the plan on Thursday during the state fair in Sedalia. He says quality internet supports learning, health care, business and agriculture.

Federal dollars from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) are paying for the program. That bill was signed earlier this year by President Joe Biden (D).

Missouri’s education commissioner is praising the plan. Commissioner Dr. Margie Vandeven says the funding will address Missouri’s digital divide, adding that students depend on high-speed internet to further their education.

Missouri currently ranks 32nd nationwide for broadband access. About 392,000 Missourians currently lack high-speed internet, either because it’s not available or they can’t afford it.
