State Department of Transportation (MoDOT) plow crews drove more than two-million miles statewide in February.

There were winter storms in three of the four weeks, and Missouri Governor Mike Parson praises MoDOT’s performance.

“You know we’re more prepared now than we have been for a long time in these weather outlooks. We’re kind of getting used to knowing what it’s like to be out there and where really can be the best place for our resources,” Parson says.

MoDOT’s emergency operations center was open for nine of February’s 28 days. MoDOT spokeswoman Linda Wilson Horn tells 939 the Eagle that crews used 86,000 tons of salt across the state in February: that’s about half of what they use in a normal winter.

Governor Parson activated the National Guard for the first two-day storm, which dropped ten inches of snow in Columbia.

“MoDOT needs to be in those (plow) trucks clearing off roads. You know, (Missouri) National Guard was there and able to help stranded motorists, which makes us better,” says Parson.
