You’ll notice a visible police and fire department presence Monday morning near the University of Missouri Research Reactor (MURR) in Columbia, which is down the hill from Faurot Field on Research Park drive.
University of Missouri officials say a routine emergency drill is planned for Monday morning at 10, adding that police, fire and EMS personnel will be participating. Mizzou officials emphasize this will be a simulation and NOT an actual emergency. Columbia firefighters, Boone County Office of Emergency Management, MUPD, MU Health Care, MURR and others will be participating.
State Rep. Kathy Steinhoff (D-Columbia) has noted that MURR is the top-ranked University research reactor in the nation. The reactor produces a medical isotope that battles various cancers worldwide. MURR is nation’s only producer of four medical isotopes used in lifesaving treatments for liver, thyroid, pancreatic and prostate cancer.
