Mizzou professor spreads the credit after Nobel win

He’s the guy with his name on the award. But Mizzou professor George Smith tells 93.9 The Eagle he has a lot of people to thank for his Nobel Prize.

“I’m accepting the prize as a representative of a whole big field with huge numbers of people who have contributed to this research.”

Smith credits his partner at Cambridge, and the people in both their labs, for all their work.

Smith is the first Nobel winner to earn it for work done at the University of Missouri. He studied viruses which could help the fight against diseases like cancer and Crohn’s.

“Properties against disease. Antibodies that would help ameliorate immune diseases, such as Crohn’s for example, or cancer.”

Smith got the call from Sweden that he won the Nobel early Wednesday. He says he will donate his part of the $1 million award to a worthy cause.
