Mo. unemployment claims rise, U.S. numbers stubbornly high

Missouri weekly initial unemployment claims are the highest they have been in more than a month.

The state labor department reported on Thursday 10,502 Missourians filed initial claims in the week ending Oct. 10. That is a 19% increase from the 8,797 claims reported during the previous week.

The latest number is the most in a week since there were 10,857 claims in the week ending Sept. 5.

More from The Associated Press:

The number of Americans seeking unemployment benefits rose last week to 898,000, a historically high number that is evidence that layoffs remain a hindrance to the economy’s recovery from the pandemic recession that erupted seven months ago. Thursday’s report from the Labor Department shows that the job market remans fragile, and it coincides with other recent data that have signaled a slowdown in hiring. The economy is still roughly 10.7 million jobs short of recovering all the 22 million jobs that were lost when the pandemic struck in early spring.
