MoDot crews work to clear roads despite bitter cold, snow

Forecasters call for one more shot of cold snow in this polar vortex.

The National Weather Service said to plan on 1-2″ of snow Wednesday, mostly falling in the morning.

Forecasters expect us to be dry the rest of the week after Wednesday.

You can crank the heater in your car and warm it up pretty quickly. But what happens if you get stuck, and have to walk somewhere for help?

MoDot’s Machelle Watkins says have an emergency kit ready in these conditions.

“You want to make sure that you are dressed warmly, that you have things in your car if, by chance, you find yourself sliding off the road or stuck out in the weather for a while that you’re safe,” Watkins said on The Mike Ferguson Show.

Watkins says the chemicals road crews use for snow removal don’t do much when it is this frigid.

“In these bitter cold temperatures, the materials that we put down really don’t do much in terms of getting rid of the snow,” Watkins said. “We’re at the point where we’re trying to push it out of the way.”

The temperature should finally get above freezing on Saturday, for the first time since Feb. 5.
