MoDOT: Sorrels overpass bridge near Columbia will require demolition, after truck incident

State transportation crews are still working on a timeline for when the Sorrels overpass over I-70 west of Columbia will be demolished.

Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) spokesman Adam Pulley tells 939 the Eagle that one lane of westbound I-70 remains closed. The bridge sustained significant damage when a waste management truck’s arms struck the overpass.

Boone County Fire Protection District assistant chief Gale Blomenkamp tells 939 the Eagle that the truck driver sustained moderate injuries, and was taken by ambulance to a local hospital.

The truck driver is 51-year-old David OBryan of Boonville. The Missouri State Highway Patrol’s crash report says his truck was loaded with a dumpster style unit with a boom, and the boom was extended. When the truck traveled under the bridge, MoDOT says the boom struck the bridge.
