The holiday celebrates the arrival of Christopher Columbus in the Americas in 1492 and is one of Missouri’s 13 official state holidays.

County courthouses in all 114 Missouri counties are closed Monday. The Missouri State Highway Patrol and emergency services like police, fire and 911 are open Monday. Columbia spokesman Christopher Ave tells 939 the Eagle that city offices are open Monday. There will be no regular mail delivery Monday and banks and financial institutions will be closed.

President Franklin Delano Roosevelt (D) signed legislation into law in 1934, designating Columbus Day. President Lyndon Baines Johnson (D) signed legislation into law in 1968, recognizing it as a federal holiday.
