The families of veterans who require extended care at Columbia’s Truman VA Hospital will soon have a no-cost option for lodging.
The Maryland-based Fisher House Foundation is starting site preparations today (Wednesday) for a new Fisher house on the Truman VA campus.
Truman VA interim director Sara Ackert says it will primarily be for those who live more than 50 miles away. The Fisher house plans a three-story, 16-room facility with private bedrooms and private baths.
Project supporters say that receiving care that requires multiple days in the hospital is difficult for veterans and for their loved ones. The new Fisher house is aimed at providing a calming environment that gives family members and patients the time and space they need, at no cost to them.
The Fisher House Foundation’s website says it has served more than 430,000 families since its inception.
