Columbia’s city council will learn details Monday night about Sonic’s proposal to build a new restaurant and drive-through near Nifong, in the 3700 block of Buttonwood. The city council will first-read a bill tonight.

Sonic wants to build an 1,800 square foot restaurant and accessory drive-up facility, on property that contains a now-vacant Kentucky Fried Chicken. That location is near Andy’s Frozen Custard.

Columbia’s planning and zoning commission has unanimously recommended that the council approve the plan to allow Sonic to proceed with the plan. Under the proposal from the D.L. Rogers Corporation, the old KFC building would be torn down, and a new structure would be built.

The applicant has expressed safety concerns about pedestrians crossing through a drive-through aisle.

Columbia’s city council meets at 7 pm, and a council vote won’t happen until December.
