Northern California fire death toll climbs to 77

(AP) – Searchers have been sifting through rubble and ash for the remains of Northern California wildfire victims before expected rain can wash the bones away.

Up to 400 people fanned out Sunday in the Sierra foothills town of Paradise and surrounding communities, where so far at least 77 people have been confirmed dead.

When no remains are found at a site, an orange “0” is spray-painted and the team moves on. About 1,000 people are still unaccounted for.
