Pakistani-born math teacher sues Jefferson City district

(AP) – A Pakistani-born math teacher who alleges he’s been singled out and passed over for opportunities has filed a discrimination lawsuit against the Jefferson City school district.

The Jefferson City News-Tribune reports that 52-year-old Naveed Malik, of Columbia, filed the lawsuit Wednesday in Cole County Circuit Court.

Malik alleges he’s “been treated differently” and “subjected to a hostile work environment.” The suit also says he has been excluded from math department group activities, professional development meetings and events in which white, American-born colleagues were included.

Malik has worked for the district since 2001. He received his right-to-sue notice from the state Human Rights Commission in October.

The district said in a statement that it “strives to provide an equitable workplace free from discrimination” and “respectfully disagree” with Malik’s claims of discrimination.
