Real ID deadline delayed, but some bases in Missouri do require them

The federal government this week delayed the deadline to get a Real ID until May 2023.

You will need a form of Real ID to board a flight or enter federal facilities once the requirement takes effect. A passport is one option. Missouri is also giving people the choice to make their driver’s license Real ID-compliant.

Joseph Plaggenberg with the Missouri Department of Revenue says the pandemic put the state behind schedule when processing licenses for a while, especially last spring.

“Since then, we’ve basically caught ourselves back up to where we needed to be, but many other jurisdictions are struggling to catch up so I think that was the impetus for Homeland Security to do that,” Plaggenberg said on Wake Up Columbia.

Plaggenberg says some Missouri military bases already require Real ID, so you may want to call ahead before going to some federal facilities. But most Missourians do not have to worry about Real ID before the old Oct. 1 deadline now.

“Certainly, everybody does have more time so there is a sigh of relief at least for my folks in trying to encourage and ensure that we can meet expectations for everybody that needs to get one.”
