Record snow causes deadly accident, late school starts

The Highway Patrol worked at least 20 crashes and 25 slide-offs during winter weather in mid-Missouri on Monday.

One accident led to a death. Troopers say Bonnie Heying lost control of her Jeep at about 4:50 p.m. Monday on Highway 54 east of Mexico, hit a ditch, and flipped. The Perry woman was 41 years old. Her passenger, 21-year-old Lucas Kerr of Perry, has moderate injuries.

Columbia Public Schools is one of several school districts that decided to start two hours late Tuesday because of possible black ice. See that list here.

We had another record snowfall at Columbia Regional Airport on Monday, of 2.4″. The previous record for Nov. 12 was 0.2″ set in 1911.
