You have an opportunity Saturday to enjoy some great food and raise money for the Beacon of Light’s community center, which is being built in one of Columbia’s poorest areas.

The Beacon of Light community center is being built in the Whitegate neighborhood near Sylvan and Towne.

United Community Builders (UCB) is hosting Saturday’s “Taste and See” soul food tasting event from 11 am to 2 pm at the Beacon of Light on Towne drive. A ticket is $50, and organizers say every bite tells a story.

UCB has raised about $7.9 million for the community center, but they note construction costs are up 12 percent since 2021’s launch. Senior Bishop Damian Dean of United Community Builders says the community center will be open Monday-Saturday and will include a gymnasium and a community room.

Bishop Dean has told 939 the Eagle that northeast Columbia has been a resource desert.
