Security researcher warns of ransomware attacks

Could you become a victim of ransomware hackers?

Jerry Gamblin, the Director of Security Research at Kenna Security, says most hackers target businesses, including Colonial Pipeline who paid out more than $4 million to hackers last month after they restricted access to company info.

But Gamblin says on Wake Up Columbia those hackers also try to take money away from individuals.

“The average person doesn’t have good backups, and if [hackers] can get this software on your PC, then most people are willing to pay until it almost hurts to get back [personal information],” said Gamblin.

Ransomware attackers made approximately $350 million last year alone, according to the Ransomware Task Force.
