Snow causes accidents, cancelations in mid-Missouri

A winter storm has caused several accidents on slick roads south and east of Columbia.

Interstate 70 had significant delays near mile marker 163 in both directions early Thursday because of accidents in the snow. The National Weather Service reported about 5″ had fallen in that area as of 6 a.m. Thursday.

Several local school districts canceled classes Thursday because of the weather, including Fulton and Mexico. Jefferson City and Helias were among the districts on a delayed start.

“The forecast that we had received yesterday was talking maybe up to an inch, and we well exceeded that,” Cole County Public Works Director Larry Benz told Zimmer News on Thursday morning. “With the cold temperatures we’ve had, the roads…the snow has stuck right away.”
