Students demonstrate against Mizzou social justice department changes

Students demonstrated on the University of Missouri campus on Monday against changes to the school’s Department of Social Justice.

Rumors started spreading over the weekend on social media that everyone who works at centers like the Gaines-Oldham Black Culture Center and the LGBTQ Resource Center were getting fired.

A Mizzou spokesman says the school started restructuring the department last fall, and will eventually put more resources and staff into those centers. Some workers will have to reapply to keep their jobs, because their titles are changing.

Maurice Gipson, the school’s vice chancellor of the Division of Inclusion, Diversity and Equity, said Tuesday that the social justice centers were not closing, and that the restructuring of the department “will enhance their ability to support out campus community.”
