Voters in Columbia/Boone County will cast ballots in November on Proposition L, which involves a proposed new Boone County jail.

Proposition L calls for adding three-eighths-of a cent to the county’s current one-eighth cent law enforcement sales tax to fund a new county jail.

Sheriff Dwayne Carey says we’re in a crisis now with jail overcrowding.

Boone County Presiding Commissioner Kip Kendrick says the county has already spent more than $2.1 million this year housing inmates out-of-county. That does not include overtime for transportation to places like the Greene County jail in Springfield or the Carter County jail in southeast Missouri.

Proposition L will be a key topic on “Sunday Morning With Ken and Brian”, which airs live Sunday from 8-10 on 939 the Eagle. Boone County Sheriff Dwayne Carey has been on the show about Proposition L and two L opponents will be on the show Sunday at 9 am. Former State Rep. Cheri Toalson Reisch (R-Hallsville) and No New Jail- Boone County member member Susan Maze will be in-studio to discuss why they oppose Proposition L.
