Prosecutor: Callaway police shooting suspect died by suicide

We know the name now for the man accused of shooting at police before he died along Highway 54 in Callaway County on Thursday.

Christopher Morris of Jefferson City was 41 years old.

Investigators say Morris sped away from cops at the capital near W. Schroeder Way and Broadway and raced up Highway 54. Spike strips north of New Bloomfield stopped him.

Morris allegedly got out of the car and started shooting at law enforcement. He died from a gunshot wound, but the Highway Patrol is investigating whether authorities shot him or he shot himself.

One officer hurt his hand, apparently from shrapnel during the gunfight. A Jefferson City patrol vehicle took some damage.

UPDATE: A special prosecutor now says Morris died by suicide.
