The 1,200 acre Mizzou campus was established as a certified botanic garden in 1999. MUBG is home to hundreds of ornamental shrubs, annual flowers and trees. Mizzou officials also say there are six or seven herds of deer that roam the gardens, along with squirrels and other wildlife. The campus also features what Mizzou calls a hidden gem: the wildlife pond near Stephens Hall.

Mizzou officials say the catalyst for the creation of MUBG was Barbara Uehling, Mizzou’s first female chancellor. Then-chancellor Richard Wallace, keeping with Uehling’s vision, gave MUBG its designation as a botanic garden in 1999.
