Thousands demonstrate at Missouri Capitol over death of George Floyd

About two thousand people marched in Jefferson City on Monday evening near the Capitol.

Most demonstrators at the capital were peaceful, but a couple businesses had windows damaged, and some water bottles were thrown at authorities. Police say they made some arrests after a suspect used a pellet gun to do some damage in a couple places.

Mary Chen of Jefferson City says recent acts of racial injustice nationally tipped the scale.

“I think as a white person, I’m finally starting to get it – that it’s going to take all of us being aggressively involved in this movement for racial justice to happen,” Chen said to Missourinet.

Missouri NAACP president Rod Chapel pointed to disparity in traffic stops as one example of why local protesters are speaking out.

“Blacks who drive up and down the street are 100% more likely to get stopped than our white brothers and sisters. That’s not right. That’s not constitutional. It’s not lawful. People ought to do something about that,” Chapel told our sister station KWOS.
