Trapp backs Columbia property tax proposal

Michael Trapp says he supports talking about fellow Columbia City Councilman Ian Thomas’s proposed property tax hike. They say it is for quality of life with economic dignity.

Property taxes would go up 30 cents per $100 of assessed value, and would go to paying for services like affordable housing and public transit.

“I’m supportive of exploring the process,” Trapp said on The Gary Nolan Show. “We have a serious issue in regards to declining sales tax revenue, and I think that moving into more property tax would be a good thing for the city.”

Trapp says he is not sure if a majority of council members would back the tax increase. Even if they did, Columbia voters would have to ultimately approve it.
