U.S. marshals capture Columbia murder suspect in Las Vegas

A Columbia man charged with a 2020 homicide at Cosmo Park has been captured by U-S Marshals in Las Vegas.

Columbia Police say 19-year-old Maurice Banks is charged with second degree murder and two other felonies for the November 2020 shooting death of 19-year-old Jermaine Spain.

CPD assistant chief Jeremiah Hunter credits the persistence of the department’s detectives and patrol officers, saying they follow every lead. He says the department stays on a case, even as new ones come to their attention.

Columbia Police say a second victim was wounded in the park during the incident.

It’s unclear whether Banks will waive or fight extradition back to Missouri. If he fights extradition, the governors of Missouri and Nevada will have to sign paperwork to make that happen.
